There is only one time in Genesis 7 where the Flood is set to be the action of God—verse 4, “I will make it rain.” Every other time Genesis describes the flood, it is the action of the water itself that wreaks destruction on the earth.

The Flood has many verbal echos of Genesis 1 and 2. It seems to be the “un-creation story,” the undoing of the organizing that God had accomplished. What took 6 days to put together takes a full 40 days to undo. And while we don’t want to minimize the direction action that God takes to stop the corruption that humans have brought upon the earth, we also don’t want to miss that the primary Creation Corrupter of the story is not God, but humanity.

  1. How does this shape your reading of the Flood account?
  2. In what ways can you see this same creation-destruction by humanity playing out today?
