The angel of the water says: those who shed the blood of the saints are given blood to drink, because it's what they deserve. That is classic retributive justice language — you get what you deserve, measure for measure. And I want us to believe in something better than that. Even when the text uses retributive language, even when it gives voice to the rage of victims demanding justice, it bookends it with hope. Before the bowls: all nations will come and worship. After the bowls: the new Jerusalem with open gates. The arc bends towards restoration, not revenge. This is victim testimony, crying out from within the trauma.
