Acts 2

"That is some earth-shattering news!"
"We have a groundbreaking new product!"
"It's raining cats and dogs!"
"What a beautiful sunrise."

Because I was super cool, I used the "Prophecy Study Bible" for most of my middle and school years. It had charts about the seven-year tribulation, pre-, mid-, and post-rapture, and even a chart of blood moons, when to expect them, and when roughly to expect the second coming of Jesus.

Old Testament scholar John Walton writes that, "The Bible was written for us; but it was not written to us." And course it's not. Unless you were born speaking three dead languages, even the act of reading Scripture requires a team of translators for us to enter into the text. And then we still have the issues of understanding idioms, metaphors, cultural references, and figures of sleep.

For instance, in the ancient near east you if you wanted to wish ill to someone, you would wish for them, "Cleanness of teeth." Clean teeth? Wouldn't that mean no dentist appointments? No. For an ancient person, it mean no food.

In Acts 2, Peter quotes an ancient prophecy from Joel saying that the end of the world would be marked with the sun turned to darkness and a blood red moon. But looking for literal moons turned literal red would be the same as Apple saying they're releasing a "groundbreaking" product, and checking the news for an earthquake.

Scripture - the Word of God - deserves our full attention. Sometimes (often times) that will require going beyond our initial understanding of a text and digging deeper. And even then, reading the Bible is not something we master. The Word of God will master us.
