Part 2: Some Ground Rules

We've established who God is—love itself, characterized by patience, kindness, gentleness, and all the fruits of the Spirit. We've seen that Jesus is the clearest revelation of divine character, that fear has no place in authentic faith, and that truth is measured by whether it sets us free.

Now we need to talk about the Bible itself. Sigh, I know.

But if we're going to use Scripture to rebuild our theology, we need to be honest about what Scripture actually is—and what it isn't. We need some ground rules. Not to diminish Scripture's importance, but to approach it with intellectual honesty that actually honors both the text and the God it points us toward.

Part 2 establishes how we read, interpret, and apply Scripture in light of everything we've learned about God's character. We'll have the necessary foundations for reading the Bible in ways that liberate rather than bind, that reveal rather than obscure, that heal rather than harm.

Certain ideas get so deeply embedded in the tradition—repeated so often, sung so confidently—that no one stops to ask whether the original actually says what we think it says.

The Kingdom of God

The Kingdom of God

When most people hear "Kingdom of God" or "Kingdom of Heaven," they think of the afterlife. They think of where you go when you die. They think of clouds, harps, and a gated community in the sky. That's not what Jesus was talking about. Not even close.
