Background Information / Review
Peter has broken the traditions of his people. And he's made some people upset. The assumption, thus far, was that Gentiles (or any non-circumcised person, not following the Jewish law) could not become Christians.
Pick a topic, we all have ideas that we have held on to for a long, long time. How do we know when we're supposed to change those ideas? And, how do we helpfully help others change their ideas?
Main Idea
Be confident enough in what you believe in to share it, yet humble enough to change it.
• Peter shared his experience. His critics shared theirs.
• Able to make others uncomfortable. And to get uncomfortable. Hear other opinions. Share your own. (Differentiation). Example: My dad and Star Wars.
• Assuming the best (read/listen generously); don't assume that someone else came to their conclusion because they're an idiot or more stupid than you. Peter tells what God did. And the Jewish Christians listen.
• Changing minds requires relationship, conversation, and a focus on glorifying Jesus. You know what Peter didn't do? Post a meme on FB.
• Who's the best example of this?
Jesus: Posture of a learner
Jesus grew in wisdom and stature (Luke 2:52). Jesus learned obedience (Hebrews 5:8-9).
Jesus wants us to be transformed. Changed. That requires growth. That requires unlearning and learning. If Jesus can do it, so can you!
Conclusion
As you review 2019 (and the whole decade), can you find anything significant you've changed your mind on? If not, why not? What does that say about your ability to learn and unlearn? And your ability to grow? How can you move forward with the posture of a learner in the days to come?
