Son of Man

The Son of Man is such an interesting translation challenge. Hebrew Bible scholar James Kugel points out its use in Ezekiel is probably diminutive in some way. Sort of the way in Spanish you would say, Chicoisimo, chicoisisimo. To call somebody son of man would be sort of like calling David son of Jesse; it's slightly insulting, you're calling them, you know, just a child in some way. So James Kugel actually translates Son of Man as "you little human, you little one" because it's the divine addressing a mere mortal, mortal.
