  • Important to note the connection between the widow giving to the temple; the teachers who "devour widows' homes" in Luke 20, and then the destruction of the temple in the next section.
  • The kind of giving shown by widow is praised (is it praised though??) and noticed. But the systems and people that made her poor are also condemned.
  • "To devour a house" is a technical phrase in extrabiblical Greek for bilking individuals of funds or property.
  • Economic exploitation and religious exploitation are never too far apart.
  • Coin is about 1/100 of a denarius; about 6 minutes labor at minimum wage.
