The author sees no contradiction between the Lord's blessing on Joseph and the misfortunes happening to him. The Lord's favor does not equate to a life free of suffering. "The Lord was with Joseph" (vv. 2, 21) brackets slavery, harassment, false accusation, and prison. יהוה (YHWH) appears eight times in this chapter and almost nowhere else in the Joseph story. מַצְלִיחַ (matzliah, "successful/prosper") in v. 2 while enslaved, and again in v. 23 while imprisoned.
